What’s so good about Charcoal?

Charcoal seems to be becoming an increasingly popular ingredient in many skincare products and can be found in toothpaste, cleansers, scrubs and masques to mention a few.

So what is so good about charcoal? I hear you ask.

Charcoal has excellent absorbency properties making it superb for soaking up excess oils, dirt and impurities from the skin. However, it is not just any ole charcoal that makes the grade as a skincare ingredient. In your skincare preparations activated charcoal is used, this is charcoal that has added oxygen. This makes the charcoal more absorbent resulting in superior effects. This is the same charcoal that is also used in the medical world as well as water purification systems. This is NOT the same as the charcoal you would use to fuel your BBQ!

Activated charcoal is especially good for oily acne prone skin types due to the amazing absorbing properties and its ability to mop up excess oils and impurities the skin produces and also soak up the environmental impurities, bacteria and germs that are ‘collected’ by the skin every day and work their way into the skins pores and blocking them. Charcoal is also quite gentle on the skin and can be used on sensitive and over stimulated skin types very successfully (but if you are concerned always do a patch test first!).

Here are a few of the benefits associated with using products with activated charcoal in them:

By deep cleansing and absorbing built up impurities from the skin that activated charcoal does, the skin will look and feel:

• Cleaner and clearer
• Softer and more supple
• Pores can look finer/tighter (as they are not full of gunk)
• Will help prevent future breakouts
• Helps reduce that unwanted shine

So come on let’s get dirty so we can deep clean!
